386. Topic 4 of 4. Jesus the Judge.

[ This is the final topic of Jesus The Creator. Jesus The Saviour. Jesus the Lord. Jesus the Judge. We can’t ignore the topic if it’s in the Bible.  ESV Bible, has 469 references to “judge” or “judgment”. But praise God, Love  occurs 896 times. So we have to take the concept seriously. We look primarily at the Final judgment when Jesus returns.

The talk was recorded and posted on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EptXVwJ-_WA  I have added some suggested Questions and a few answers.

1).       GOD’S JUDGMENT IS ALWAYS JUST AND THOROUGH

Gen 18:25  … Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?”

Psa 9:7  But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, 8  and he judges the world with righteousness… with uprightness.

Ecc 12:13  … Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.  14  For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

2).       JESUS ACTS AS GOD’S AGENT IN JUDGMENT

(Joh 5:22)  The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,

Joh 5:27  And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

(Joh 8:16)  Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.

(Act 17:31)  because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

(Rom 2:16)  on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by (dia = through) Christ Jesus.

3).  EVERYONE WILL STAND BEFORE THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF GOD

Rom 14:10  Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11  for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” 12  So then each of us will give an account of himself to God

1Co 4:5  Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

2Co 5:10  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

(2Ti 4:1)  I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

Heb 9:27  And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment

4).        THE BASIS OF JUDGMENT

I).        One’s Attitude To Jesus

Joh 3:17  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Joh 5:28  Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice Joh 5:29  and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

2Th 1:6  since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7  and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8  in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9  They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,  10  when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

II).        The rejection of Jesus and His words

(Joh 12:48)  The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

III).      Ungodly Behaviour And Speech

Mat 7:22  On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23  And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Heb 13:4  Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

Jud 1:14  It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15  to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Rev 20:12  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13  And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done

IV).      Refusal to repent

Mat 11:20  Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. Mat 11:21  “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

Mat 11:22  But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23  And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24  But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Rom 2:4  Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5  But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. Rom 2:6  He will render to each one according to his works: 7  to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8  but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

Act 17:30  The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31  because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

5).        WHAT HAPPENS IN GOD’S JUDGMENT?

I).     SEPARATION OF GOOD AND EVIL

Jesus’ illustration about the sheep and the goats, and people’s failure to care.

Mat 25:31  “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32  Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33  And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.

The “sheep” are rewarded for caring.  Mat 25:34  Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

Why? Mat 25:40  And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

The “goats” are punished for not caring. Mat 25:45  Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46  And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

II).       PUNISHMENT ON THE UNREPENTANT WICKED

2 Th 1:6. God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you ….8  inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9  will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

III).      Rewards for those who trust and obey

1Co 3:14  If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward

(2Ti 4:8)  Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

6).        HOW TO AVERT JUDGMENT

Through repentance and trusting in Jesus Christ

Joh 5:24  Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Joh 5:28  Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice :29  and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

7).        DOES GOD WANT PEOPLE TO FACE HIS JUDGMENT?

2Pe 3:9  The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

8). JESUS WHO WILL BE JUDGE THEN, WANTS TO BE OUR FRIEND NOW

I).         We become friends by trusting and obeying God

(Jas 2:23)  and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”–and he was called a friend of God.

(Joh 15:14)  You are my friends if you do what I command you  15)  No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

II).        Jesus can help us as no other friend can

Mat 11:28  Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

III).      Jesus wants to be our close friend

(Joh 15:4)  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

(Joh 15:7)  If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

(Joh 15:9)  As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10)  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

(1Jn 2:28)  And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

IV).      We can be confident when He comes

1 Jn 2:28, 1Jn 2:28  And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
