598 Preventing Sin By Memorising The Word Of God. Psalm 119:11.

There’s an old saying which says, ”Sin keeps us from God’s word or God’s word keeps us from Sin!” It has encouraged  a lot of young believers to try to memorise many of verses from God’s word to use when being tempted to sin. Of course, one has to remember that every verse needs to be interpreted in the light of its context to fully understand its true meaning. But remembering single verses helps us to find the context of those verses to give us a more balanced understanding of God’s word. Here is how the Psalmist recognised the power of God’s word, Psalm 119:9  How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. 10  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

The following is a list of verses that one can turn to, to see how the Lord has promised to answer our prayers as believers and how He can guide us as we seek to live for Him.

VERSES INDICATING THAT GOD HEARS AND ANSWERS THE PRAYERS OF HIS CHILDREN

2Chronicles 7:13-14.   When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14  if my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Psalm 37:4  Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Psa 91:15  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honour him.

Jer 33:3  Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Micah 7:7  But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.

Matthew 6:6  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 7:7–11. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.   8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.  9  Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone 10  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Mat 18:19 -20.  Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20  For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Luke 11:13  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Mark 11:22 -24.  And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23  Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Rom 8:26  Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27  And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

James 5:13-16.  Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14  Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15  And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16  Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

1Peter 3:12  For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

1 Jn 5:14-15. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15  And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

VERSES ON SEEKING THE LORD’S BLESSING OR GUIDANCE

Psa 32:6  Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. 7  You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.  8  I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
